BWTP Retrofit Supervision During Dry Dock

With the new MARPOL ballast water regulations coming into effect, the vessel required a Ballast Water Treatment Plant (BWTP) retrofit during dry dock to remain fully compliant. While the engineering and planning phase had already been completed, my responsibility was to supervise the entire onboard execution and ensure the project ran smoothly from start to finish.

I stayed onboard throughout the dry-docking period, working closely with the shipyard, contractors, vessel crew, equipment suppliers, class surveyors, and the client on a daily basis. Being constantly present onboard helped me respond quickly to issues, keep communication flowing between all parties, and make sure the work progressed safely and efficiently.

One of the most important parts of the role was maintaining the client’s confidence throughout the project. I provided daily progress reports, addressed concerns immediately, and ensured that any unexpected challenges were resolved at the earliest possible stage. Dry dock projects often move under tight schedules and pressure, so clear communication and fast coordination were essential to keeping everything on track.

Despite the usual challenges that come with retrofit work on an operating vessel, the project was completed within budget and within the planned dry dock schedule. The installation and final inspections were completed successfully, class requirements were fully satisfied, and the vessel achieved compliance with the latest MARPOL regulations.

Most importantly, the client was pleased with the overall execution, responsiveness, and support provided throughout the project.
